Science teacher Travis Davis, School Garden Coordinator Carly Chaapel, and a few SCVTS students recently completed the beginner beekeeper’s course offered at the Rutgers Eco Complex in Bordentown, NJ. After completing the course, they set up their own beehive on campus – the first high school in Salem County to own and maintain a beehive!
The schoolyard garden program at SCVTS recently won the 2015 Best Rookie Garden in the State of New Jersey! In addition to the beehive, their garden program includes two gardens, a chicken coop, and the foundation for a new greenhouse. They were judged, along with other school gardens throughout the state, by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, Rutgers Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, the NJ Agricultural Society, the NJ Farm to School Network, and Edible Jersey magazine.
We would like to congratulate SCVTS on having New Jersey’s Best Rookie Garden and thank you for bringing bees to your school not just for the garden, but also to educate students about the precious honey bee!
